It’s been over seven years since Modest Mouse last released an album (the Johnny Marr featuring ‘We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank‘). I’m a big fan and it’s been a frustrating wait. But over the last few days the band have been leaving little clues on their Instagram account, and over the weekend sent a limited edition 7″ of the their new tune, Lampshades On Fire. It’s a tune they’ve had in their locker for at least 3 years and has been played at a number of lives shows, and the good news for those who haven’t heard it yet is it’s a cracker. Classic Modest Mouse.

A new tune is good news in itself but the even better news is that a new album called, Strangers To Ourselves, is going to be released on the 3rd March next year. Finally the wait is over.

You can check out, Lampshades On Fire over at The Current.

Modest Mouse – any chance of a new album soon, please?

A couple of months back Twitter went fizzy with the news that Big Boi from Atlanta hip-hop duo, Outkast was producing tracks for the new Modest Mouse album.

It’s taken me awhile to sort myself out and stumble across the following blog on Myspace, but found it I have and it’s got a couple of treats (click here). Two, new (vaguely – the blog dates back to May 31st) Modest Mouse tracks, debuted at the Sasquatch music festival on Sunday 29th May.

The tracks, Poison and Lampshades On Fire seem to hark back to the kind of stuff they were doing (at their peak?) around the time of, The Moon & AntarticaFans who’ve heard them seem very happy anyway – and I have to agree with their grinning.

The production on the last two or three albums has been too slick for some – here’s hoping with these two excellent new ‘taster’ tunes (and the Big Boi news) that a new album is going to come very soon (from a slack, wonky, raggedy angle) and knock us off our feet.
