MGMT covered Pink Floyd’s awesome Lucifer Sam (from Piper at the Gates of Dawn) on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon the other night. Pretty good it was too. Check out the video below:

Odd Future, when their not pissing off Steve Albini or swearing on awards shows, enjoy releasing plenty of albums. Frequently for free.

Whilst Under the Influence is the first free OFWGKTA mixtape we’ve heard since MellowHype released Blackendwhite in October last year, Tyler the Creator’s, Goblin (and monster hit, Yonkers) has sent them stellar, and they’ve started popping up all over the place (they even have a new TV show in the making).

A lot of their stuff’s pretty good too.

Blast from the past – Silver Jews – Random Rules

Malkmus ally and awesome lyricist, David Berman’s Silver Jews released Random Rules in 1998. And 13 years on, it still sounds witty and fresh.

Random Rules featured on Silver Jews’ American Water. A slacker rock masterpiece which is one of three Jews albums to feature Berman buddy and fellow Slacker Shack hero, Stephen Malkmus. Buy it here (you won’t regret it).

Sadly, two years ago Berman announced his retirement from music, announcing his intention to move into either, “screenwriting or muckraking.”

He also added, “I always said we would stop before we got bad. If I continue to record I might accidentally write the answer song to ‘Shiny Happy People’.”

In January 2011, Berman launched his blog, Menthol MountainsHis diverse and hugely enjoyable blog features everything from comic news to essays, poetry, music and general judaica.

The greatest worst album covers of all time: The Faith Tones – Jesus Use Me

This is my favourite of the bunch so far. I love it so much I’m refusing to research facts about it, as I don’t want them to taint the enjoyably unsettling gonkiness of it all.

I could happily glance at this cover every day for the rest of my life.

I hope it exercises your chuckle muscles as much as it has mine.

Ad Rock guest stars on US cookery show Top Chef: Just Desserts

Do you love shovelling filthy food into your mouth whilst New York white-boy hip-hop blares out of your stereo?

Of course you do – which why the news that Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock randomly showed up on last night’s episode of American TV cookery show, Top Chef: Just Desserts, will come as a joyous foodie/hip-hop surprise.

Look at him chowing down on his self-made, “PB&J” rolled-up sandwich. Lovely isn’t it?

I have it on good authority that the whole thing was just as bizarre as it sounds and I’d love to show you the video. Unfortunately it seems people in the UK aren’t able to.

Shitter – if it’s as funny as the made up version in my head, it would have been a right good giggle for all of us. Soz n’ that.

Great news for all you apple bores out there – Slacker Shack’s favourite record label, Domino Records have created a new free download iPhone app which features radio shows, new material and much more.

Domino artists include, Arctic Monkeys, Animal Collective, Franz Ferdinand, The Kills, Four Tet, Dirty Projectors, Wild Beasts, Clinic,  Anna Calvi and Villagers.

The idea was the next logical step for Domino after the huge success of Domino Radio, an online station which has aired shows from artists including amongst others, Robert Wyatt, Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet).

The Domino app features:

– An exclusive weekly selection of Domino Radio material
– A mix of over 200 streamable tracks
– A tailored news feed focussing on Domino’s roster

In addition to this, anyone who downloads the Domino app and signs up to their mailing list before the 1st November will be entered into a free prize draw. The winner receives a “year’s” worth of free music from the label (well, 12 free digital albums anyway).

Download the app for free HERE.
