Zinedine Zidane headbutt sculpture

Zinedine Zidane‘s infamous 2006 World Cup final headbutt has inspired a new sculpture currently on show in New York City’s David Zwirner Gallery (see above).

The violent finale to Zidane‘s illustrious career, where he headbutted Italian defender, Marco Materazzi’s sternum is sculpted in bronze. The exhibition is called, ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf’ and is the work of Algerian conceptual artist Adel Abdessemed.

The eye-catching and powerful exhibition brings together recent works that revolve around themes of war, violence, and spectatorship. It also includes four life-size sculptures of the crucified Jesus made entirely from razor wire, as well as drawings of ‘kamikaze’ porcupines, weasels, tortoises, and other reptiles all with sticks of dynamite strapped to them.

The exhibition was unveiled on the 17th February and is on show until this Saturday (17th March) – check out more stills from the show here.
