World Championship of Ping Pong

Now that Barry Hearn‘s decided to take on the world of table tennis (after previous flirtations with boxing, darts and snooker) and make the sport popular and ‘rock n’ roll’, I can’t help but return to the following photo of Will Ferrell and wonder, is this the future of ping pong?

Starting tomorrow, London’s Alexandra Palace will host the World Championship of Ping Pong, where sixty four of the world’s best table tennis players will compete to earn their share of a $100,000 (£61,000) prize fund.

Speaking to the BBC, Hearn reckons he’s going to, “make them all superstars,” adding, “it’s rock ‘n’ roll. It’s going to be high fives, knocking balls into the crowd, interaction between the players and the crowd.

“I get one chance at this to impress the paying public. The purists have been crying out for this. Now they’ve got their chance.”

The World Championship of Ping Pong takes place this weekend – you can find out more about it here.
