Danny Brown – ODB – new video

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2013 by dc

US hip-hop is having a peculiar year. From Kanye West‘s opinion splitting, but frequently mesmeric Yeezus LP, through to the ongoing rise of Trap, the return of Boom Bap and the hazy purple drank production underpinning tunes by rappers like A$AP Rocky, SpaceGhostPurrp and 2Chainz. It’s all over the place – restless and fidgety.

‘Restless and fidgety’ is a good place to start with Danny Brown‘s latest offering too. ODB is a psychedelic curdle of a tune with Brown rhyming all over it like a wild-eyed and eloquent crackhead. The synths sound like the high pitched soundtrack to a forgotten horror movie and the whole thing makes me think of the Spaceman 3 album title, “Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To”. It’s disorientating but not unpleasant.

It took a few listens to sink into it, but now that I have I’m mildly obsessed with it. See what you think:

Danny Brown‘s latest album, Old, is out on the 30th September.

Cool ‘Future of the Left’ poster

Here’s a cool gig poster I bought from the Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester today.  It’s by one of my favourite poster artists Jay Ryan for alternative Welsh noiseniks, Future of the Left and dates back to a Chicago concert the band performed back in November 2009:

New Discovery – Bird to Beast

Bird to Beast (aka married couple Sam and Hannah Hird) hail from Colne in Lancashire. The duo signed an album deal with new Manchester indie MUK Records late last year and are gearing up for the imminent release of their debut EP, To Lips From Lungs.

I had the pleasure of watching them perform with a full band for the first time last night, and they blew me away.

Essentially they’re a folk band but their influences are vast and varied, from the pop nous of greats like The Beach Boys, Kate Bush and The Beatles to contemporary singer-songwriters like Rufus Wainwright and James Mercer – and with their debut lead single, touches of French pop too.

Check out their new video for, To Lips From Lungs, below:

Sam started playing violin aged four and has studied and played music for most of his life. He (purposefully) missed out on Britpop in the 90’s, deciding instead to immerse himself in classical music whilst studying at Chetham School of Music and then The University of Manchester.

Hannah came early to music too, and started playing piano aged seven, later singing in a number of choirs and going on to study at The University of Salford. For the past year she has toured with singer Ellie Goulding, singing backing vocals and performing at numerous festivals and TV shows, including, Later with Jools Holland, The Jonathan Ross Show – and even William and Kate’s Royal Wedding reception.

To Lips From Lungs is released on iTunes on 8th September, preceded by a single launch party at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester’s Northern Quarter on 5th September (you can get hold of tickets here).

Their eponymous album follows on 14th October, and you can check out some more tunes over on the Listen page of their website here.

Check them out now while they’re still a gently whispered secret… you’ll be glad you did.

‘Getaway’ trailer

Here’s the new trailer for forthcoming film, Getaway. The Ethan Hawke and Jon Voight starring action film won’t win any prizes for originality but it looks adrenaline-packed fun nonetheless:

Getaway is out in UK cinemas on the 4th October.

Squirrels – first trailer

Tired of modern horror films? Scared of cute, tree-dwelling vermin? Then how about this…. a new horror film featuring killer squirrels:

Here’s the official synopsis for ‘Squirrels‘ – “When a young man’s estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his mom’s sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.”

Seems strangely relevant when you think of all the fracking news currently knocking about the UK.

Not sure when we can expect to see it, but the lesson is clear – don’t f*ck with nature…
