New Discovery – Fuzz

fuzz

Early reports from last weekend’s Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, included rave reviews of Ty Segall and Charles Moonheart‘s new San Francisco ‘supergroup’, Fuzz.

The group sees Segall step behind the drum kit in spectacular fashion (he’s sings lead vocals too) and is lit up by Moonheart’s beautifully immediate and doom laden guitar solos. I hadn’t heard of them until yesterday, but I’m an instant fan of their grimy, heavy psychedelic rock.

Check out three of the bands tunes – ‘Fuzz’s Fourth Dream‘, ‘What’s In My Head‘ and ‘Loose Sutures‘ – below:

Fuzz‘s debut self-titled album came out today.

Under The Skin – trailer

Music video maestro and feature film director Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) has a new film called, Under The Skin, currently doing the festival circuit (Telluride, Venice and Toronto so far).

Glazer and co-writer Walter Campbell have adapted Michel Faber‘s acclaimed novel and the film follows Laura (Scarlett Johansson), an alien in search of loners, as she drives around the exquisitely moody landscapes of the Scottish highlands.

A fairly peculiar premise – the trailer’s pretty odd too – check it out below:

As yet there’s no official release dates for the film – but I’m guessing it’ll be early next year.

Martina Topley-Bird, Mark Lanegan and Warpaint collaborate on ‘Crystalised’ cover

One of my favourite singers from the old trip-hop scene is Martina Topley-Bird. Her stuff with Tricky was consistently mesmerising and her effortless vocals always hit the spot.

This week see’s the return of Topley-Bird (with her first new music in 3 years) and she’s joined forces with the grizzly Mark Lanegan and all female LA rockers, Warpaint, to record a cover of The xx‘s hit single, ‘Crystalised‘.

It’s minimal, smooth and warming like a late night Irish coffee – check out the video below:

New Discovery – RADSTEWART

radstewart

I had the pleasure of discovering a great new band tonight on Bolton FM. I tuned into Shell Zenner‘s show to listen to an interview with The Black Angels (which was great – they’re an eloquent and interesting bunch of chaps). Once the interview was finished I was about to get back to a film I was watching and then I heard that a song by a new band from Cardiff called, RADSTEWART was about to get an airing. I love a daft band name, so I stuck around and listened to one of their tunes, the excellent, Beer Swindlers.

The track took me right back to the mid-90’s when I first discovered slacker rock and fell in love with bands like Pavement, Guided By Voices, Silver Jews and Swearing at Motorists. I loved it. So much so I thought I’d blog about it and share their new three track EP, Whig Crooks and Beer Swindlers with you all here – check it out below:

They’ve even got a vague motto which makes me like them even more, namely – “If you’re listening to this song, you may think the chords are going wrong, but they’re not, we just wrote it like that.”

You can buy, Whig Crooks and Beer Swindlers here (‘name your price’) – and visit them on Facebook here.
