New British horror film ‘Dementamania’ – first trailer

Touted by reviewers as, “possibly the best British horror since 28 Days Later”, “an intriguing and twisted thriller”, “an ambitious little gem, full of creativity and a twisting plot that throws the audience into a delirious nightmare” and “a bold piece of film-making” – forthcoming Brit-horror flick, Dementamania was one of the surprise hits at this year’s Frightfest.

Early audiences say the film draws on movies as dark and diverse as American Psycho, Jacob’s Ladder and David Cronenberg‘s The Fly. The trailer also suggests that scriptwriter, Anis Shlewet and director, Kit Ryan are big fans of the dark surrealism of David Lynch and the nightmarish torment of Clive Barker‘s work too. All great reference points, especially for a director just two films into his career.

So, what’s the film about? Well, here’s the official synopsis – “Frustrated with the social injustice he must face every day and the bureaucratic culture of the office he works in Edward Arkham is at boiling point. Although successful in his job, working for a leading IT consultancy, years of routine have taken their toll, his work now seeming so unbearably monotonous, fueling his frustration and bitterness.

“When Edward is stung by a mysterious bug, it results in a painful and aggressive rash. It also unlocks the door to a secret world inside his head causing nightmarish fantasies to manifest themselves within vivid hallucinations. As the rash spreads and threatens to envelop his entire body, his visions become more real and reality begins to drift further and further away.

Are these apparitions solely bound to the confines of his mind or are their other unknown forces at work and is he part of something more sinister than he could possibly imagine?”

Check out the first official trailer for the film below and see if it tickles (or ‘grapples’) your fancy:

There’s no official release date yet for Dementamania, but I’m guessing that it’ll be sometime early next year. Keep your eyes peeled…
