David Bowie – Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy) – new “£8” video

Posted in Uncategorized on October 31, 2013 by dc

David Bowie couldn’t make the Mercury Music Prize awards last night (won by James Blake – if you’re arsed to know), but he made up for it by sending them a video for a James Murphy remix of ‘Love Is Lost‘ from his recent ‘The Next Day‘ album.

Describing it as having a “strangely moving gothic inflected storyline perfect for Halloween”, the video features puppets from his own ‘collection’ and only cost £8 to make (the cost of the flash drive he put the video on supposedly) – check it out below:

Bowie wrote, shot and edited the video, and the full James Murphy remix of ‘Love Is Lost‘ will appear on Bowie‘s repackaged The Next Day Extra collection due for release on the 4th November.

Bill Callahan‘s latest album Dream River is up there as one of my favourite albums of the year. The beautifully minimalist, Small Plane is the first track to get the video treatment (which Callahan also co-directed) – check it out below:

New Cate Le Bon album out next month

With last year’s Cyrk album and Cyrk II EP, Cate Le Bon continued the fine tradition of Welsh psychedelia. Positioned somewhere between the gloriously wide-eyed shenanigans of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynki and the solo work of the Super Furry AnimalsGruff Rhys, Cyrk and Cyrk II were unmintigated successes even if they didn’t set the world alight sales wise.

Described by Gruff Rhys as “Bobbie Gentry and Nico fight over a Casio keyboard”, Le Bon’s melancholic lyrics belie her fascination with beautifully quirky arrangements and cheery melodies. Her music’s a contradictory breath of fresh air.

Hopefully her forthcoming Mug Museum album will see her gain a bigger following. Lead single, I Think I Knew, a duet with Perfume Genius (aka Seattle based singer-songwriter, Mike Hadeas) is a lovely introduction to Le Bon‘s cosy, Nico-esque melancholia – check it out below:

Mug Museum is released on the 11th November.

The Flaming Lips cover Tame Impala’s ‘Elephant’

The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala originally collaborated on the Lips’ Heady Fwends album last year – and now Wayne Coyne‘s gang of psychedelic adventurers have continued the musical love-in by covering Tame Impala‘s ‘Elephant‘.

The track is set to feature on a collaborative EP where the two bands will cover each other’s songs.

The bands, who’ve already toured together, embark on another three date US tour which starts tonight in LA. As yet there’s no official release date for the EP, but it will be available at their coming shows.

Checkout the ‘in studio’ video for The Flaming Lips‘ ‘Elephant‘ cover below:

It’s not really a patch on the original is it? But it’s still rather good fun nonetheless.

New Beck album due out next February

This coming February sees the release of Beck‘s first album since 2008’s Modern Guilt.

Morning Phase will be released on Capitol Records and has been described as,“a companion piece of sorts” to Beck’s 2002 album Sea Change.

The recent PR release also states that, “Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record (Sea Change), while surging forward with infectious optimism.”

So folky stuff, with strings and that. Maybe a bit serious and broken hearted – that’s my guess.

Truth is, anything Beck does gets my thumbs up – Scientology gubbins aside the fella can do no wrong.

Arctic Monkeys – One For The Road- new video

As gently pleasant as it is, I have to admit that ‘One For The Road‘ isn’t one of my favourite tunes from Arctic Monkeys recent ‘return to form’ LP, AM. It’s pleasant (the backing vocals are particularly lovely) but I’d have thought ‘Knee Socks‘ or ‘Snap Out Of It‘ would have made better singles. But what do I know? Check out the new video below:
