Slacker Shack’s top twenty hip-hop tunes of 2011

Posted in Lists, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 19, 2011 by dc

It’s been a pretty good year for hip-hop with a lot of great artists like Danny Brown, Tyler the Creator, Cities Aviv, Stalley, Das Racist, A$AP Rocky and the ridiculously named Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire all breaking through. Many of them taking the bold and unorthodox route of releasing free albums to get our attention too – and all of them look set to have great 2012’s.

Maybe I’m just tired of 95% percent of commercial hip-hop but the only really ‘big’ releases that caught my attention were the ever reliable Pharoahe Monch‘s W.A.R (We Are Renegades), The Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part II and handful of tracks from Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s collaboration, Watch the Throne.

A few British rappers released quality albums too (or at least a few quality tunes in the case of Wiley), including the brilliantly slack and atmospheric, Ghostpoet, Ipswich rapper, Dels and the ever reliable, Roots Manuva.

Anyway, I’ve compiled my favourite 20 hip-hop tunes of the year (a handful of which you can download below) and it’s a pretty varied bunch. The only rule was, ‘only one track per artist’.

In no particular order, here they are:

13 & God – Death Major
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire – The Last Huzzah! (feat. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown & El-P)
Lil B – Open Thunder Eternal Slumber
Stalley – Hercules
Tyler, the Creator – Yonkers
Ghostpoet – Cash And Carry Me Home
Beastie Boys – Long Burn The Fire
Gonjasufi – Ninth Inning
Danny Brown – Monopoly
E-40 – Drugs Ft. B-Legit
Pharoahe Monch Feat. Jean Grae & Royce Da 5’9″ – Assassins
Pusha T – Trouble On My Mind Ft. Tyler The Creator
Wiley – Numbers In Action
Cities Aviv – Die Young
Beans – Air Is Free
Dels – Lazy
JAY Z & Kanye West – Ni**as In Paris
Modeselektor & Busdriver – Pretentious Friends
Jedi Mind Tricks – Willing A Destruction Onto Humanity
Das Racist – Michael Jackson

I didn’t include anything from Shabazz Palaces’ Black Up, as I like to listen to that album as a whole and sink into it.

Rapper of the year? It’s Danny Brown for me. XXX has dominated my ipod for over three months and his collaboration (Black & Brown) with Black Milk is awesome too.

2011 ‘album of the year’ contenders

As we head into the last two thirds of October and the last third of the year, minds start drifting to ‘album of the year’ contenders – and 2011 has already been a cracking year for long players.

As was the case for much of the noughties, this year has really thrown a mixed bag up so far – handfuls of great albums from a kaleidoscope of genres – but it’s been a particularly great year for those albums which find themselves slotted into the ever widening alternative-rock pigeon hole.

From the mellow and heartfelt (Bon Iver, The Phoenix Foundation, Real Estate) to the peculiar and lo-fi (Youth Lagoon, Unknown Mortal Orchestra) and all things louder (White Denim, Morning Teleportation) and stranger (tUnE-YaRdS, Chad VanGaalen) inbetween.

It’s also been a damn fine year for alternative hip-hop. With new stars surfacing both sides of the Atlantic.

In just five minutes I was able to pick 25 albums that have impressed me this year (and there’s a few weeks left to go – who knows what tomorrow may bring?).

Here’s my unordered list so far:

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Mirror Traffic
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Das Rascist – Relax
Bon Iver – Bon Iver
Danny Brown – XXX
Real Estate – Days
Boston Spaceships – Let It Beard
tUnE-YaRdS- WHO KILL
White Denim – D
Mister Heavenly – Out Of Love
Morning Teleportation – Expanding Anyway
Chad VanGaalen – Diaper Island
Beans – End It All
Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Part  2
Cults – Cults
Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues
Ghostpoet – Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam
Tyler, the Creator – Goblin
Gruff Rhys – Hotel Shampoo
Kurt Vile – Smoke Ring For My Halo
Tom Vek – Leisure Seizure
Youth Lagoon – The Year of Hibernation
The Phoenix Foundation – Buffalo
Shabazz Palaces – Black Up
Wu-Tang Clan – Legendary Weapons

I’ve probably missed a few corkers out too – anyone got any other suggestions?
