Jay-Z releases ‘Open Letter’ addressing his recent trip to Cuba

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 11, 2013 by dc

As many of you already know, Jay-Z and Beyonce caused a a mild furore in the US recently by visiting Cuba to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.

It’s claimed by the couple that their trip to Havana was fully licensed and authorised by the US Treasury department – and to follow that up and set things straight, Jay-Z has today uploaded a track called, Open Letter where he addresses the media storm and clears things up (in fine style).

Check out the track below:

For those wishing to find out more about the US’s embargo against Cuba (it’s history and finer points are at best ‘mildly confusing’ – for instance, “the regulation does not limit travel of U.S. citizens to Cuba per se, but it makes it illegal for U.S. citizens to have transactions (spend money or receive gifts) in Cuba. Since even paying unavoidable airfare ticket taxes into a Cuban airport would violate the transaction law, it is impossible for ordinary tourists to visit Cuba without breaking the monetary transaction rule”) click here.

Jay-Z & Kanye West – Niggas In Paris

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 9, 2012 by dc

Here’s the new video for Jay-Z & Kanye West‘s Niggas In Paris. Easily the best single from the rappers mildly underwhelming collaborative album, Watch The Throne, released last year, it’s an absolute stonker of a tune.

WARNING – Do not watch this video if you suffer from epilepsy:

The video is made up of clips from the hip-hop twosome’s huge recent tour (and the track is a live performance too – not sure which gig it’s from though – soz).

Slacker Shack’s top twenty hip-hop tunes of 2011

Posted in Lists, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 19, 2011 by dc

It’s been a pretty good year for hip-hop with a lot of great artists like Danny Brown, Tyler the Creator, Cities Aviv, Stalley, Das Racist, A$AP Rocky and the ridiculously named Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire all breaking through. Many of them taking the bold and unorthodox route of releasing free albums to get our attention too – and all of them look set to have great 2012’s.

Maybe I’m just tired of 95% percent of commercial hip-hop but the only really ‘big’ releases that caught my attention were the ever reliable Pharoahe Monch‘s W.A.R (We Are Renegades), The Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part II and handful of tracks from Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s collaboration, Watch the Throne.

A few British rappers released quality albums too (or at least a few quality tunes in the case of Wiley), including the brilliantly slack and atmospheric, Ghostpoet, Ipswich rapper, Dels and the ever reliable, Roots Manuva.

Anyway, I’ve compiled my favourite 20 hip-hop tunes of the year (a handful of which you can download below) and it’s a pretty varied bunch. The only rule was, ‘only one track per artist’.

In no particular order, here they are:

13 & God – Death Major
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire – The Last Huzzah! (feat. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown & El-P)
Lil B – Open Thunder Eternal Slumber
Stalley – Hercules
Tyler, the Creator – Yonkers
Ghostpoet – Cash And Carry Me Home
Beastie Boys – Long Burn The Fire
Gonjasufi – Ninth Inning
Danny Brown – Monopoly
E-40 – Drugs Ft. B-Legit
Pharoahe Monch Feat. Jean Grae & Royce Da 5’9″ – Assassins
Pusha T – Trouble On My Mind Ft. Tyler The Creator
Wiley – Numbers In Action
Cities Aviv – Die Young
Beans – Air Is Free
Dels – Lazy
JAY Z & Kanye West – Ni**as In Paris
Modeselektor & Busdriver – Pretentious Friends
Jedi Mind Tricks – Willing A Destruction Onto Humanity
Das Racist – Michael Jackson

I didn’t include anything from Shabazz Palaces’ Black Up, as I like to listen to that album as a whole and sink into it.

Rapper of the year? It’s Danny Brown for me. XXX has dominated my ipod for over three months and his collaboration (Black & Brown) with Black Milk is awesome too.

Lil Wayne – Tha Carter IV – out this Sunday

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 23, 2011 by dc

Never one to dabble in understatement or fall prey to a lack of hype, Lil Wayne has decided to release his latest album, Tha Carter IV, at midnight this coming Sunday – directly after his performance at the  2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I am extremely excited to be the first artist to utilize such an amazing idea. I hope that I can open the door for others,” Lil Wayne said in a press statement.

Just last week Jay-Z and Kanye West decided to throw a curveball at traditional album-release strategies by reclusively selling their, Watch the Throne album at a specially designed pop-up store in Manhattan, New York – and now Lil Wayne has chosen to turn his latest album release into an ‘event’ by making it available for download straight after the second biggest music awards ceremony in America.

“Lil Wayne continues to change the game – this time with a new release strategy that demonstrates the power of the VMAs to grab the attention of music fans,” MTV President Stephen Friedman said.

“After our millions of viewers experience the VMAs, they can go online at midnight and download the album they’ve all been waiting for.”

The tracklisting as yet is unconfirmed, but the album will include the following tracks – They Love Me (feat. Drake & Nicki Minaj), John (If I Die Today) (feat. Rick Ross),  Fore Play, 6 Foot 7 Foot (feat. Corey Gunz), Street Life, No Trust, Play My Game (feat. Tech N9ne), Fall From Grace (feat. Eminem), Maybe She Will (feat. Drake & Rick Ross) and My Legacy.

Tha Carter IV, was due to be released back in May and Lil Wayne has been working on the album since October 2008. Since then has served jail time for being found in possession of a criminal weapon and released 2010 ‘rock’ album, Rebirth.

Earlier this month, Lil Wayne released his Sorry 4 the Wait mixtape, which built the hype up nicely for this Sunday’s release (download the mixtape here).

Ever the marketer’s wet-dream, Weezy‘s back. Keep your ears peeled.
