New Discovery – Goat

There’s nothing like a good back story to make a newly discovered band all that more exciting and intriguing. Swedish band/collective Goat are the perfect case in point.

Legend has it that Goat is a collective of musicians who hail from a remote village in deepest darkest Sweden. For centuries, the inhabitants of the village were dedicated to the worship and practices of Voodoo. This seemingly unlikely activity is rumoured to have been introduced into the area after a travelling witch doctor and a handful of her disciples were led to the village by following a cipher hidden within their most sacred of ancient scriptures. Their Voodoo influence quickly took hold over the whole village and so they made it their home. This was until their non-Christian ways were discovered by the Church and they were burned out by the crusaders, the survivors cursing the village over their shoulders as they fled.

The Voodoo curse laid upon the village can supposedly be heard throughout World Music, Goat’s debut album – released on Rocket Recordings yesterday.

The albums nine songs draw on a number of influences from afro-beat to (shamanic) funk, and from psych-rock through to post-punk – it’s riveting and head-noddingly awesome stuff – whether the mythology that forms their back story is true or not.

And while we’re at it, here’s another tune from their new album – Let It Bleed:
